Ultrasound is a valuable and non-invasive method for diagnosis of many medical conditions. Depending on your pets’ needs, bodily samples can be taken for analysis from specific organs in a safe, non-painful, and less invasive manner than a traditional surgical biopsy. It is a safe and repeatable way to look inside the body. We often refer our patients to a local referral hospital for internal medicine specialist and cardiology services, including ultrasound. We also offer ultrasound services by a traveling ultrasonographer who comes to the clinic and results are interpreted by a board-certified radiologist.
Your veterinarian may have requested an ultrasound exam of your pet for one of the following reasons:
- Pre-surgical
- Abnormal bloodwork
- Heart disease
- Fluid in chest or abdomen
- Vomiting or diarrhea that has lasted for a long time
- Weight loss with no change in eating habits
- Chronic infections
- Change in urinary habits
- Baseline ultrasound for future examination (geriatric patients)
- Recheck on previous problem
- Cancer staging
- Pregnancy
- To permit biopsy
